Nakhon Si Thammarat

In the past, people in Pak Phanang Basin Area relied on water sources for agricultural purposes.  The Pak Phanang River is an important river in this basin area and is the centre of prosperity in many aspects, making Nakhon Si Thammarat Province a land of milk & honey in Southern Thailand.

Later, the population increased, and there is the need of water for consumption.  The basin area which was once prosperous changed to a dried area, and the number of trees decreased rapidly.  The area of the Pak Phanang River was lower than sea level and was not very steep, causing sea water to enter the area easily.  The southern area of the basin called Khuan Khreng was a large basin area which kept water all year round, releasing pyrite, which caused acidic soil and water.  There was not enough water for cultivation.

Higher  sea levels along with a large amount of rainwater during the rainy season made it impossible to drain the water into the sea, damaging agricultural areas and communities.  There was not enough crops for people to depend on for their livelihood.  Thus, His Majesty King Bhumibol tried to find solutions to the problems.  He ordered Royal Irrigation Department to conduct reserch on how to build Uthokwipat Prasit Watergate at Pak Phanang Basin Area Development Project Under Royal Initiatives.  This was to prevent seawater to enter the area and keep fresh water inside.  Also, Royal Irrigation Department has built an irrigation system to alleviate flooding and distribute water for cultivation.  The qualify of life of the people in the local area has become better since then.

You can learn about the talent of the King for dealing with 4 problems concerning water – flooding, lacking of water, salt water, and acidic water – at Museum Honouring the King for the Development of Pak Phanang Basin.  Also, visiting Pak Phanang Royal Palace, which is the only palace built for the King by the Thai people in honouring the King and being grateful to him for what he had done.
