Ban Khok Mueang

Situated not too far from “Prasat Mueang Tam”, the 1,400 year-old ancient stone castle of ancient Khmer civilization, Ban Khok Mueang also preserves its distinctive ancient community way of life. Hence, travelers will be able to experience the impressive lifestyle, traditions, people’s hospitality, and learn marvelous local wisdom through a range of handicrafts, which they will not only get to praise the beauty of finished products, but also learn from the beginning processes.

Another local distinctive signature is silk woven with Phak Kut (fiddlehead) pattern. Travelers will be able to observe the making processes that are ancient local wisdoms from silkworm rearing, silk reeling from      the cocoons, to using handlooms to weave silk threads into fabrics with delicate Phak Kut pattern, which derives from the decorative design of      the capitals of the arched entrance of Prasat Mueang Tam. Additionally, travelers can try weaving reed mat or fermenting fabrics with 1,000 year-old Baray clay. These are wonderful opportunities to try new things that have never been tried before and simultaneously help preserve and allow these ways of life and local wisdom to breathe alongside the community for a long time.

During the visit, travelers can taste rare local recipes such as Kung Chom (Fermented Shrimps), Chaeo Bong (Northeastern Chilli Sauce), Khao Chi (Charcoal-Grilled Rice) and rest in a homestay accommodation of local villagers, who look forward to welcoming visitors with warm hospitality to experience and learn their Southern Isan’s charming way of life. Unsurprisingly, Ban Khok Mueang was selected as one of 80 OTOP Village Champions (OVC) under culture village category in 2006 for its distinctive identities, which the locals are well aware of and ready to share these amazing values with travelers.
