Visit the Green Community, Tour the Canals and Orchards, and Explore the Way of Nature Route, Trat Province

Trat Province

Start

Situated on the east coast of Thailand, Trat province is known for the numerous islands that are scattered off its coast including the famous Ko Chang, the second largest island in the country. However, not only the sea, sand, sun, and its islands, Trat is also blessed with an abundance of natural resources; such as, mountains, forests, and rivers. The Visit the Green Community, Tour the Canals and Orchards, and Explore the Way of Nature Route will take you to a green journey to experience the simple canal-based way of life, learn about natural conservation, and discover another side of Trat that you may have never seen before.

Day 1

Depart Bangkok for Trat, and start the green journey by visiting the Ban Nam Chiao Ecotourism Community, where Thai Buddhists and Thai Muslims live together peacefully along the canal. Learn its unique local wisdom by observing and trying to weave ‘Ngop”, an atap palm leaf hat made of atap palm, which grow abundantly by the canal. It originated from the Chinese traders’ bamboo hat in the past and is very suitable for people in a tropical area to protect themselves from the sun’s rays and rain.

Enjoy local cuisine and fresh seafood for lunch.

After lunch, continue to explore other fascinating local wisdom of the Ban Nam Chiao Community. Learn how to make Tangme Krop or crispy caramel, a traditional local dessert with a dried wooden stick-like shape, consumed by both Thai Buddhists and Thai Muslims, especially during the Ramadan period.

Nowadays, it is also put in coffee and tea instead of sugar. After that, hop on a boat, cruising to the nearby mangrove forest, where locals will demonstrate how to catch Tongue Shell living under about a hundred-metre-deep river. If you would like, enjoy catching it by yourself, wet and fun!

Cruise to dinner at the Thio Thara Restaurant, a seafood restaurant by the canal.
Overnight at the Hotel Toscana Trad in Trat.

Getting to the Eco Tourism Group Bannamchiao Community
You can take the Trat – Laem Ngop Highway (No. 3148) which runs straight through the Ban Nam Chiao Community onto the bridge over Khlong Nam Chiao. The Community straddles both banks of the canal. Ban Nam Chiao is about 8 kilometres from the Trat city area, and 232 kilometres from Bangkok.

DAY 2

After breakfast, head to the Chang Thun Eco-museum to learn about the Chong people, their culture, as well as their passion and dedication for natural and cultural conservation. Begin the tour at the eco-museum, visit the Green Bank, the area only provided for tree plantation, walk along a nature trail, and learn about the Chong people’s way of life under the concept, “whatever we take from nature, we have to give back”.

Enjoy traditional Chong recipes for lunch; such as, banana stalk curry and fried pork with salt.

Getting to the Chong Chang Tune Live Ecomuseum
From the Saen Tung Intersection, Amphoe Khao Saming, Trat province, take the right turn (with the optical shop “Top Charoen” at the corner) and keep straight on for about 1 kilometre to the intersection with the sign “Ko Loi”. Take the right turn here to find the sign pointing the direction to Ban Chang Thun 27 kms. Keep straight on until the PTT service station is spotted and turn left. About 1 kilometre ahead is the Volunteers for Self Development and Defense arc (under a blue roof). Turn in and drive on for about 300 metres to reach the Chong Chang Tune Live Ecomuseum.

In the afternoon, take an adventurous journey by riding on a Salenger , a motorbike with a sidecar, to experience many interesting activities that reflect the identity of the Chong people.

Firstly, learn how to make a Check dam from natural materials in order to slow the water flow. Try a White Mud Spa, getting yourself pampered amidst natural surroundings with minerals in mudpacks to nourish your skin, while using Thao Khi Rat, a kind of plant as a natural soap to exfoliate your skin. After getting your skin revitalised, it is now time for some precious stones. As Trat is also known as a ruby mining site, you can try panning for Siamese Rubies (red gemstones) in the riverbed using the ancient Chong technique. End up with relaxing at the Spa de Chong, a local retreat with Thai herbal steam, in a unique and creative way, using a chicken coop.

On the way back, visit the Gems Market in Amphoe Bo Rai to inspect and buy some jewellry as souvenirs.

Enjoy a delicious and healthy dinner at the Krung Thai Kitchen, in which all the menus are cooked with organic vegetables and no MSG.

Overnight at the Hotel Toscana Trad in Trat.

Day 3

Visit the Huai Raeng Ecotourism Group and experience the community’s simple way of life on the fertile land due to a combination of fresh, brackish, and salt water, so it is also called the ‘Land of Three Waters’. Learn the community’s local wisdom through various activities; that is, make mangosteen rind soap in a bamboo mould, and make Khanom Chak, a traditional Thai dessert made of flour, coconut, and sugar, wrapped in atap palm leaves before charcoal-grilling. Another exciting thing to do is to try making Betel Leaf Wrapped Rice, which will become your own lunch package from natural materials. It is quite eco-friendly, and very comfortable to carry anywhere.

Getting to the Huai Raeng Ecotourism Group
From Bangkok, use Highway No. 3 or Sukhumvit Road. Before reaching the Trat city area, you come to a crossroad to Ban Chbang Kluea. Turn left and continue on for about 9 kilometres, with the Khao Noi Withayakhom School spotted on the left. Drive past the school and turn right at the first sub-road, go straight on for about 4 kilometres to find Wat Khlong Khut, where the sign of the Huai Raeng Ecotourism Group can be spotted.
